“The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it, the world and all who live in it; for He founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters”
aPsalm 24: 1-2.
Every year, the 5th of June is commemorated as World Environment Day.
Unlike yester years, the World Environment -2020 in Bishop Cotton Girls’ school was commemorated virtually owing to the prevailing pandemic situation. The students were unable to attend school, but they did not miss the opportunity to reaffirm their stewardship of the environment.
The virtual assembly for the year started at 8.30 am with a Hymn ‘How great Thou art’. This was followed by a brief scripture message by Mrs. Christy P. Bobson, highlighting the responsibility of man to protect God’s creation.
Samriddha Basu of Std. XII , representing the student community spoke on the theme ‘Celebrating Biodiversity’. She shared some tips on how one could start protecting and nurturing the environment at a very young age. This was followed by a Pledge administered by Riya Arshad of class X. The pledge included simple doable actions that a student could perform to protect the environment.
After the pledge, our Principal Dr. Mrs. Lavanya Mithran, inspired the staff and students who were virtually present, with a simple message on how to be a responsible citizen. She emphasized that our unmindful actions would threaten our existence in future. She also suggested a few productive activities that the students could do at home during the lock down.
Dr. Mithran also announced an activity to encourage students to indulge in activities like painting nature or photography and planting saplings. The students were asked to email their work to the Principal.
The morning assembly ended with the school song. This was the first virtual event for the year 2020-2021.
WED commemoration did not end with the assembly. The following week four students, Haniya and Sanjana Carol of class 12 and Saanvi Dharman and Aadya Singh of class 10 were given an opportunity by the Ecology Department of KCD to express their perspective on ecology by sending their recording to Rev. Hemalatha to be telecast on KCD Youtube channel and website .
The schools under the ICSE Council paid tribute to Mr P.N Panicker, father of the library movement in Kerala and the man behind Kerala’s 100% literacy rate.
Observing the week beginning 19th June ,2020 till 26th June 2020 as the reading week and the month until July 18th as the reading month.
Teachers’ at the Bishop Cotton Girls’ School introduced Mr Panicker and his works in the online classes for the senior school, followed by student discussions and presentations on favorite books, authors, poets and dramatists.
On the 26th of June we celebrated the reading day by organizing an online programme for all high school students combined which began with Mrs. Mary Deepa Patrick (English department) leading the audience in prayer. Principal Dr Mrs. Lavanya Mithran delivered her address on the importance of reading, followed by Mrs. Esther Jebakumar H.O.D of the English department who spoke on the need to inculcate the habit of reading . Haniya of Std 12 Arts presented a tribute to Mr. Panicker by taking us through his life and achievements. This was followed by narration of a short story shark bait by Sajana Carol of Std.12 science and a poetry recitation by Teevra Sinha of Std. 12 Commerce -Love Her Wild. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Kezia Elaine of Std.12 Arts who reminded us to be grateful to all writers, emphasizing again on the importance and need of reading.
In these difficult times of the pandemic it is these books that will remain our faithful companions and we hope to continue these activities through this month and hope to inspire more and more through the years as they study here at Cottons.
